Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen

Mary Schmich is the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who created the iconic commencement address ‘Wear Sunscreen’ in 1997 – written as an essay not a speech, and a music video made in ’99 by film maker Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby). Schmich gives one perfect instruction:

“Wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.” Credit.

The beginning of summer means a new start for graduating students. For some, it involves a new school with the older, cooler kids, for others it means making that final leap into adulthood. Bet none of them would have thought that the most important piece of advice they could be given could be two simple words “wear sunscreen”!
